Kangaroo & Joey Male Kangaroo with females Joey in arms Hairy Nose Wombat Emus emu2sm Kooka

Khancoban is right on the edge of Kosciuszko National Park. Kangaroos regularly graze in the town. particularly in drought periods. Wombats abound (Please be careful on the roads), emus are usually seen in Kosciuszko National Park (Particularly near Geehi rest area & Tom Groggin Station). Feral deer and horses are also often spotted around the area. I remember last year driving along the Alpine Way around midnight, on a foggy & snowy night, I was confronted by a magnificent black, brumby stallion standing in the middle of the road, with steam from both nostrils. Truly a magnificent & unforgettable sight.

Animals such as those pictured above and below surround our town, so please drive slowly, especially around dusk & dawn. If you do have the misfortune to hit an animal, please do not leave it to suffer. The local vets will help with injured animals, or advise National Park Rangers in Khancoban.

Even though animals such as koalas and wombats may look cute & cuddly do not attempt to handle them unless unavoidable - they can deliver a nasty bite, or scratch! If you need to handle them. find an old towel or jumper, to wrap them with and use gloves if you have them.
