The secret to summer fishing is the constant influx of freezing cold hydro water, through 50klms of pipes & tunnels, all the way from Lake Eucumbene. This icy water creates ideal conditions for trout. Most rivers & streams in Australia get too warm for trout to thrive. Khancoban at only 300 mtrs above sea level, would normally be far too warm for trout, but because of the hydro water, we have one of Australia's premiere trout fisheries. Other Khancoban advantages include:
Summer has been quite good with some beautiful redfin up to 4lb. The Swampy below the Spillway has been fishing well, with some nice browns up to3kg. Unfortunately, you will also come across the occasional european carp, during summer (please cut it's head off & throw it back to the crayfish - don't leave it to stink on the bank!!!) . There are no carp in the Khancoban Pondage (Let's keep it that way), or the Upper Swampy River.
Pete Tanevski with a lovely 2.5kg brown May 21st 2005 - Check out the colour!!!
Geoff North with a 1.6kg redfin (nearly 4lb) caught July 2004 Rob Waite, Luke O'brien & friend with a few healthy specimens from the Khancoban Pondage (August 5&6 2003). Fished most of the day Saturday and a couple of hours Sunday morning, for a dozen nice sized trout between them. Scrubbies & mudeyes are the preferred bait. Please check we have bait in stock before heading up! ('phone (02)60769488 for enquiries & bookings.
John Rupik with a 15lb monster Brown Trout Caught on a scrub worm Khancoban Pondage October 2002 Khancoban Pondage is one of the few lakes on the mainland where five kilo (10lb) trout are common. Most of the fishermen who frequent these waters, have at least one of these huge fish adorning their walls. There have even been the odd 10 kilo or 22lber caught - check out Mrs Howard (23lb) over the public bar at Khancoban Alpine Inn.
Paul Southwell from Lavington, dropped in after a hunting trip, picked up this 8lber on 6lb line, with no net, from the Swampy Plains River below the spillway Mon Oct 18 2004
Dwayne Heath - fell asleep & woke up with a six plus pound present!
George is not happy - He's ecstatic! Khancoban Pondage is open year 'round and can be fished from shore or by boat. Khancoban also boasts a blue ribbon trout stream in The Lower Swampy Plains River (Lure or Fly only), which is a favourite with "the fly guys". KLCR has hire boats, rods, waders, as well as, fishing licences, pondage maps and our patrons are happy to impart knowledge to neophytes |
